October 4, 1991: Wonderful Day for New York Rangers Fans

On October 4, 1991, Mark Messier was traded from the Edmonton Oilers to the New York Rangers, along with “future consideration” Jeff Beukeboom.  In return, the Rangers sent Louie DeBrusk, Bernie Nicholls, Steven Rice, and “future consideration” David Shaw to the Oilers.

I wonder what Don Cherry thinks of this trade today?  “…died and gone to heaven with Steven Rice, Louie DeBrusk…”

Steven Rice, Edmonton Oilers – three seasons, 94 games, 19 goals, 20 assists

Louie DeBrusk, Edmonton Oilers – six seasons, 228 games, 19 goals, 12 assists

One more time, “…died and gone to heaven with Steven Rice, Louie DeBrusk…”  Don’t think so Don.

And what about that point-per game average for Bernie Nicholls?  Not quite.

Bernie Nicholls, Edmonton Oilers – two seasons, 95 games, 28 goals, 61 assists
